Basic Description: Ananta is the serpent on which Vishnu rests between acts of creation.
Alternate Names: The Endless
Iconography:
A thousand-headed serpent--usually shown with fewer heads--which form a canopy over Vishnu.
Mythology:
Hindus divide time into large cycles. Although many other myths describe Vishnu as active throughout time. According to some stories he sleeps on Ananta between cycles.
